Education Coordinator

Summit Community Gardens - EATS (SCG-EATS) is seeking an Education Coordinator to lead our seed-to-soil educational programs with youth. Our programs blend hands-on gardening, cooking, nutrition and sustainability for Pre-K to 9th graders in our community garden, in local schools, and offsite at various locations. This position reports to the Director of Education.

The ideal candidate will have experience leading indoor and outdoor programs with children, developing curriculum, creating recipes, and gardening. Great communication skills are key. Assisting with building partnerships, working with volunteers, and program coordination rounds out this role. The Education Coordinator plays a key role in realizing the SCG -EATS vision of creating healthier outcomes for local children and inspiring the next generation of foodies.

Who We Are

Summit Community Gardens - EATS (SCG-EATS) is a non-profit organization located in Park City, UT with a mission to gather, learn, and grow in our Garden, schools and community. We believe that everyone should have access to healthy food, and that children who cook and garden are connected to where food comes from and are more likely to have lifelong healthy eating habits. We are working towards an inclusive community focused on learning, connection, wellness, and stewardship.

What We Do

We bring the community together to educate and inspire in various ways. We operate Summit County’s only community garden and engage in school and community-based seed-to-plate-to-soil education programs. During the school year, we lead school-based Edible Education programs for 1800 children in Summit and Wasatch counties. Our Garden consists of 134 community plots and a large demonstration garden where we grow food for community members experiencing food insecurity. Our Garden is also the site of summer camp, after school programs, and dinners with local chefs.


What You Will Do

Implement Education Programs

  • Lead or assist SCG-EATS cooking and gardening classes in school classrooms and greenhouses (during the school year) and onsite at our garden during SCG-EATS garden season, including summer camps

  • Lead or assist Summer Camp acting as the on-site supervisor for summer camp when the Director of Education is off-site.

  • Lead or assist with the coordination and implementation of cooking and gardening programming with partner organizations

  • Be familiar with restorative behavioral management practices

  • Prepare for classes (i.e. grocery shopping and taking inventory)

  • Work with the Director of Education and Executive Director to develop new programs with community partners to share cooking, nutrition, and gardening knowledge and build confidence and connection. (i.e. JRES, High School, Clubhouse, Peace House)

  • Assist in managing volunteers in schools and garden

  • Work with the team on identifying opportunities for volunteers

Curriculm Development and Evaluation

  • Track evaluation metrics and attendance for all classes

  • Distribute surveys and input data

  • Develop recipes and curriculum collaboratively for all education classes

Operational Support

  • Coordinate our Fruit to Schools access program, working with our supermarket partner, school outreach coordinators at 8 schools, and volunteers to provide fresh fruit weekly for children who are eligible for free and reduced lunch

  • Coordinate community education events with a family focus, including promotion, outreach to partners, work with volunteers, and serving as on-site lead

  • Understand all platforms used to run the education programs and assist in processes as needed, including Squarespace, SmartWaiver, Canva, Google Suite

Other Tasks as Needed

To Be Successful, You Are Someone Who

  • Is a lifelong learner with: a Child Development Associate (CDA), two years of college, a bachelor's degree, or a graduate student (relevant fields include: child development, education, social work, nutrition, horticulture, environmental sustainability)

  • Has 2-3 years of relevant experience in fields such as Gardening, Cooking, Education and Nutrition

  • Has excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Has experience facilitating youth activities and public speaking

  • Has experience in curriculum development

  • Has experience or interest in food systems, nutrition, and culinary arts

  • Can build strong, collaborative relationships with members of our team, plus has a proven track record of working independently.

  • Will successfully pass a criminal background check

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a reliable car. Personal vehicles will be used for transportation to and from schools in Summit and Wasatch counties. Mileage will be reimbursed according to IRS guidelines..

  • Has a current food handler’s permit, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

  • Has a current CPR/First Aid permit, or ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.

  • Knows how to find points of connection with diverse groups of people, a positive attitude, and an asset-based mindset.

  • Is a professional with great judgment.

  • Recognizes ways that race and other identities impact the communities we serve and can identify when there is a decision, policy, or practice that may have disparate impacts

  • Is willing to work outdoors in all kinds of weather

  • Is extremely organized. Great with data. Able to use Excel, Canva, Mailchimp, Sign-up Genius, Squarespace and a variety of social media platforms.

A Big Plus If You….

  • Speak Spanish

  • Have experience with non-profits

  • Shop for ingredients for our preK and elementary classes we have this week

  • Help to ensure our year-end deliverables are reported correctly before our holiday break

  • Develop a pesto recipe for our middle school class next week

  • Collaborate with the Education Director around all things summer camp and create a game plan for registration and scholarships for January

  • Organize supplies in our storage unit, to make production go smoothly for classes

This is a 30-hour/week, salaried, hybrid, year-round position that requires time in-person, on-site in the Garden and at locations around Park City. A car and driver’s license are required, as is the ability to lift 40 pounds. Salary range $32-37K for 30 hours/wk (if working 40 hours, this would be ~$42- $49K) depending on experience, with Simple IRA and 3% match, health & wellness stipend, 4 weeks paid time off after 3 months and paid holidays, a plot in the Garden & access to garden produce and a fun, always changing work environment.
