Summit Community Garden and EATS, in partnership with The People’s Health Clinic (PHC) and the Christian Center of Park City (CCPC), launched the Food Farmacy program during the 2023 growing season. The program is intended to increase access to fresh produce to those experiencing food insecurity. We created this program because we believe food is medicine and fresh produce can have a huge impact on overall health. For our program, PHC identifies patients that would benefit medically from eating more fruits and vegetables and they are offered prescriptions for produce. The gardens provide fresh, organic produce, which is grown in our demonstration beds, to fill these prescriptions. The food is then distributed by CCPC and any extra produce not utilized for the program is offered at CCPC’s mobile food pantry at PHC, as well as in the food pantry located inside the Christian Center. This program is year round and when we are outside of our growing season, CCPC is able to utilize grant funding to purchase fresh produce from local grocers.
In the first year of our program we served over 1,700 patients and families through the Food Farmacy and mobile pantry events at PHC! Over 1000 pounds of food was grown in our gardens and we look forward to increasing our impact in the community for years to come.
