Summer Garden Educator

The Summit Community Gardens - EATS (SCG-EATS) Garden Assistant is a key part of our team, helping to manage our vibrant 1.5-acre Garden space: growing food donated to community partners; building a community of plot renters; managing volunteer groups large and small; and creating a space where volunteers, families, and casual visitors to the garden feel welcome.

What the position is

The Summer Garden Educator will report  to the Director of Education. They will be responsible for helping to lead SCG - EATS’ fun summer camps and some events, including: gardening, cooking, arts and crafts classes and excursions. These programs take place in the garden with some off site programs. This is an on-site position at the Garden, 4056 Shadow Mountain Drive, off Old Ranch Road in Park City.

Camps run 8 weeks during the summer: June 9th to August 8th, from 9-3, excluding July 4th and July 7-11. Approximately 18-20 children attend each week, with 3 staff leading programming. 

Ideally, the schedule would be:

  • 25-30 hrs/wk June 2nd - 6th, July 7th - 11th and August 11th - 15th 

  • 35 hrs/wk all other weeks between June 3rd and August 16th

  • Hours typically within the 8:30 - 3:30 camp timeframe 

  • Pay is $18-$20/hr, depending on experience, with a $300 end of season bonus

The position requires strong leadership skills, self-motivation, basic administrative skills and familiarity with Google suite products (or willingness to learn), ability to assist with production around daily camp activities and garden events, and a passion for teaching youth about topics like gardening, cooking, environment, arts and crafts and the different life cycles taking place in the garden. Through this position, you will have the opportunity to learn about organic farming practice, outdoor education, sustainable food production, production and administration for a small garden based nonprofit, and other non-profit experience.

Primary responsibilities 

  • Create an inclusive community where kids can learn about gardening, the environment, safe preparation & cooking of food, and camaraderie. 

  • Run outdoor summer camps with the education team. This includes leading and/or assisting with lessons, activities, behavior guidance and set-up & clean-up.

  • Assist with administrative tasks around summer camp programming.

Qualifications 

  • Experience working with youth ages 6-12, particularly in an outdoor setting

  • Basic knowledge of sustainable, organic gardening OR strong desire to learn

  • Organized, motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a group

  • Desire to work outdoors in variable weather conditions

  • Excellent communication skills, positive attitude, and ability to solve problems creatively

  • U.S. Citizenship or be eligible to work in the U.S. 

  • Pass a National Background check (SCG - EATS will fund this process)

  • CPR/First Aid Certified or be willing to get certified (SCG - EATS will fund this process)

Preferred Experience 

  • Prior experience with teaching, gardening, farming, or communications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications (Gmail and Google Docs)

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and work in the garden

  • Spanish speaking ability a plus
